What Colour is Blekinge?

Exploring Blekinge — where stories turn into colour and data becomes art

This project began with a simple yet profound question: If Blekinge had a colour, what would it be—and why?

Through conversations with residents, surveys and reflections, I explore their emotional connection to the landscape, and then channel that spirit into visual and auditory expressions — blending traditional analogue painting, digital visualisation, and data-driven composition.

The Dual Lens: Researcher and Artist

In this work, I inhabit a dual role. As a researcher, my task was to systematically collect and analyse data from participants to identify collective themes and patterns. To ensure the integrity of their voices, I kept my own impressions separate during the initial analysis phase, allowing the participants’ stories to speak fully and without filter.

As an artist and a resident of Blekinge, I also embarked on a personal journey. Through the method of autoethnography, my own emotions, words, and specific choices of colour and form became an integrated part of the final works. Here, my own experience is allowed to take its place as an essential element of the artistic interpretation.

From Soft Waves to Forest Shadows

The research revealed that for many, Blekinge is defined by its softness. When asked about shapes and patterns, “soft, undulating lines” was the most popular choice (60%). The landscape is perceived not as jagged or harsh, but as rhythmic and gentle — like waves, rolling hills, or polished stones.

While most found peace in the undisturbed nature, others provided more intricate textures, such as “speckled patterns” like sunlight through leaves. Perhaps the most evocative description summarised the entire geography of the region:

“A staircase that begins at the sea and ends in the dark colours of the coniferous forest.”

The Synthesis: Analogue and Digital

Through this process, I have sought to create an artistic synthesis where objective data meets subjective expression. The result is a multi-layered narrative presented in two forms:

The Analogue. Physical acrylic paintings that serve as a tactile interpretation of the collected data.

The Digital. An audiovisual and data-driven work created with new technology, giving movement and sound to the essence of the stories.

Presenting these works on monumental screens in Karlskrona, Sweden and Szczecin, Poland, allowed the private reflections of the participants to meet a public stage.

A Platform for Reflection

Ultimately, this project is about creating a platform where art and technology meet. By anchoring the process in a close dialogue with the people who live here, I have tried to create a work that does more than just reflect a region—it invites a conversation about identity, community, and the importance of place for our sense of self.

The Publication

For those who wish to explore the transition from data to art in even greater detail, I have documented the entire methodological journey and the specific findings in a comprehensive publication. This book provides a transparent look at the research, the analysis of the participants’ voices, and the results that formed the foundation of the final visual works. If you would like to read the book, please reach out via email at hello@lanagraphic.com. (Note: The book is currently available in Swedish.)

In autumn 2025, the work travelled to the Szczecin Philharmonic Hall in Poland for AI-Connect — an international event that brings together artists, scientists, and innovators exploring the intersection of creativity and artificial intelligence.

This work is part of an ongoing artistic research project that explores the identity and soul of Blekinge, a region in southern Sweden. The research boldly investigates ways to visualise personal stories and experiences, unveiling new tools, methods, and techniques along the way.
