This painting is not a depiction of a single location, but a visual soulscape of Blekinge, born from the collective memories, feelings, and stories of its citizens. As the analogue centrepiece of her “What Colour is Blekinge?” project, artist Lana Leuchuk has translated qualitative data into a vibrant, emotional landscape that explores the deep connection between people and place.
The dynamic sky is filled with broad, energetic brushstrokes—splashes of joyful yellow, pink, and deep, powerful sea-blues—each representing a fragment of a shared narrative or a burst of emotion. The lush greens, resilient pine and weathered rocks of the foreground ground the scene in the region’s characteristic nature and anchor these fleeting memories in the timelessness of the landscape.
A figure sits in contemplation, perched at the edge where land meets the vast, open sky. This figure embodies both the individual storyteller and the collective spirit, serving as an invitation to the viewer to find their own place within this shared panorama. Ultimately, the work is a painted dialogue that captures the multifaceted identity of the Blekinge region through the eyes of those who call it home.
